Check out Karen Duckles’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Duckles.

Karen, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I did my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from U.C. Davis and went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts degree from Washington State University, but it wasn’t until I spent an exchange year in Japan that I found my artist’s voice. The meditative quality of Zen resonated with me and found its way into my work. I have been inspired by this ever since. There is a concept in Zen called “Beginner’s Mind”, in which the practitioner works to remain aware of the moment and not allow preconceptions and familiarity to close it off. This has kept the work fresh and interesting all these years.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create oil paintings, most recently of botanical subjects. But I paint because I love the quality of the paint itself. The flow and physicality of the paint is important to me, and I work in a gestural style, often using my hands, paper towels, or palette knife for paint application. This imparts a sensuous quality of touch to the work. I think of the paint as a metaphor for skin and bone, and the paintings often have that contrast of soft and hard, I like to create a subtle seduction with paint a canvas.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Well, artists can get their work out there more easily with the internet and social media, but I think it’s harder to get noticed. It’s always great if there are venues where people can see the work in person. It really has a completely different impact than it does online.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see my work at different venues throughout the Los Angeles area. 57 Underground, Art Share L.A., Los Angeles Art Association, Dysonna City Art Gallery and various art fairs. I generally post these on Instagram.
