Check Out Kaitlyn Gee’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Gee.

Hi Kaitlyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve recently made a career change and I couldn’t be more excited! After a few years of working in the healthcare industry, I decided to pursue a career in marketing. I’ve learned that once you find what your passions are, it’s important to go after them. Growing up, I’ve always had a creative eye and a drive to succeed.

Since I was young, I’ve loved the world of arts including theater, film, and photography. Whenever I saw a creative and exciting opportunity, I pursued it. In sixth grade, when I learned that my school play was Romeo and Juliet, I went home and practiced Juliet’s lines everyday. I may have taken the audition pretty seriously but hey, I got the part of Juliet! In middle school, I joined the TV broadcasting team and was also a background actor on TV shows like iCarly and Victorious (yes, that’s probably where you know me from). At sixteen, I decided to run in my city pageant for the first time. I dedicated months of practice and in the end, I was crowned as a pageant winner. In high school, I fell in love with photography and started a photography business. I created a photography Instagram that grew to nearly 10k followers before deactivating it so I can focus on school. Once I realized that I was a good entrepreneur, I began selling clothing and handmade accessories online.

Going into college, I didn’t know what to major in or what career I wanted to pursue at the time. (Who really knows what they want to do at 18?) Being the planner that I am, I thought I should pick a major that would land me a stable job after college. After seeing some friends and family find great careers in the healthcare field, I decided to major in health care administration. It was a great department that led me to an internship and then a job right after graduation. Outside of my 9-5 job, I needed a creative outlet and became passionate about social media content creation. I started creating content for my Instagram (@kaitlynlauren) about fashion, home decor and travel. I’ve been able to do collaborations with different brands and have done shoots with some talented photographers in LA. I began managing the social media for my church, my sister’s bakery business (@rachel.bakery), and a social networking app. I also picked up my camera again and was hired to do some photoshoots for people. As I filled my time with creative projects, I realized that marketing is something I would love to do full-time. I found my passion and knew I had to go after it. However, deciding to make a career change during a pandemic was difficult. Making a huge change in such an uncertain time is scary to me. But I’ve learned not to let my own fears or other people’s opinions keep me from pursuing my passions. Throughout my job application process, I was able to share about my experience that I’ve gained both in my previous work and in my passion projects. This year, I started my new marketing job in the consumer goods industry and I love it! I’m excited to continue learning and growing my career.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were definitely challenges along the way. It took time and experience for me to feel called towards a certain direction. When I felt ready to change my career, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and my plans were put on hold. Job searching during this time is already difficult. But I also worried that not having a marketing degree and my years of work in a different industry would keep me from landing a job that I wanted. Over the past few years of working in health care, I gained valuable experience and transferable skills that helped me get where I am. I just needed to change my mindset and to focus my energy on what I love to do rather than on my doubts.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m passionate about content creation, social media marketing and event coordination. What I love most about these areas is the ability to be creative and see your vision come to life. In my previous job, I was able to travel and organize events around the nation. In my current job as a marketing coordinator, I collaborate with our marketing team on creative projects and influencer marketing campaigns. Aside from work, I’m doing freelance digital marketing with several brands. I am also creating content for my Instagram, sharing especially my love for fashion and home decor. This year, I want to continue doing what I love and taking on more creative projects.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
