Today we’d like to introduce you to Jr Francisco.
Jr, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My photography journey is somewhat unusual because I did not grow up with any artistic passion. I always felt that I am one of those kids that did not have any unique or natural born talent. I was all over the place. I will try everything that catches my attention but will eventually give up the moment something else comes along.
One thing I know is that I like to be in control. So growing up, all I want is to get a business degree and eventually start a business. I did all I can to pursue my dreams as fast as I can. I would go to school in the morning and go to work at night. Through time, I was able to move up in my company and obtain my degree. But eventually, those years of hard work took a toll on my body.
The pressure of chasing my dreams and starting my own business caught up to me. It was hard to be productive. To relieve some stress, I decided to start a new hobby. For no specific reason, the first thing that came to my mind is photography.
The very first camera that I bought was a refurbished Nikon D60 and a 35mm lens. I have no idea how an SLR works but that did not stop me. I skipped reading the manual, which I still do not do up to now, and didn’t even bother going to YouTube for tutorials. All I know is that I have to take a peek into that tiny hole, turn the lens until the subject is focused, and then press the shutter.
I still remember the very first photo I took with my camera, a bark of a tree with a lake in the background. Right after, I was hooked with photography. I can’t put my camera down.
I will shoot everything that caught my eye. I will take thousands of photos a day. Once I got better, I got into wedding photography. I did that for about a few years then later I decided to focus on portraits and fashion to express myself more as an artist. I am still in the early stage. But here I am, more passionate than ever.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a portrait and fashion photographer based in Orange County, CA. I enjoy taking photos of women because I love capturing the soft and raw emotions that only a woman could give. I also like to show confidence in every woman I shoot. I want them to feel empowered in every photo I take.
I also like to keep my poses simple, natural, and composed because this way, people will be drawn more to my subjects’ faces and their eyes. A lot of things can be communicated just by looking at one person’s eye, which is why I always try my best to make sure I capture all of these messages through my lens.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Money can be a big concern for all creatives. For photographers, just the equipment alone can get expensive quick if not managed correctly. My biggest advice to anyone in the industry or wants to get into this industry is that there are a lot of ways to invest in yourself without throwing out a lot of cash. Practice, practice, practice. Pile up your skills and not the bills. You make the art and not the $3000 camera. Never feel limited just because you do not have the newest and most expensive gears.
Also, there is nothing wrong with getting another job while you pursue your dreams. I advise people to do so because it lessens the burden of trying to make it as an artist now. If you love what you are doing, you will find time to do it. I think worries and concerns slow down an artistic mind. If getting another job would fix that problem, then do not be embarrassed to do so.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
