Today we’d like to introduce you to Hira Akhtar.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always had love for art and that’s something I’ve inherited from my mom and dad. They’re both extremely creative and they have passed it on to me. My first memory of me playing with makeup was when I was 8 or 9 years old, I would do my sister’s makeup who’s nine years older than me and try to create a profile since back then there was no social media. I was always glamming my friends up in high school for proms and dinner dates but I didn’t turn this into a career until my husband motivated me to take the chance on myself. About five years ago, I turned my passion into work. I have come a long way since then.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life has taught me, you can never accomplish success without any bumps in the road. I got married in my early twenties and life took a different turn for me. I was a wife and a mother before anything else and that made me put my dreams on the back burner. Taking some time off my career definitely set me back but it also made me come back stronger and more confident. The road to success for a makeup artist is slow and challenging as it requires commitment and a deep passion because it can be draining at times. It takes time to build up a clientele and gain enough prominence to become the go-to makeup artist, but it can be done. I am far from where I would like to be but I believe I’m headed exactly where I want to be.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Makeup Artist & Hairstylist. I have worked in different countries over the past five years and that’s what gives me an edge. I started off here in California, got married and then continued my work in Dubai for a couple of years, then Pakistan and now I have settled back in California. .Through my transitions into different places in the world, I took a lot of inspiration from different cultures, which made my style very versatile. To succeed in the makeup industry, the most important thing is to evolve because trends change on a daily basis so it’s important to continue to keep up with what’s in at the moment. My specialty is definitely Bridal Makeovers. Bridal makeup is an essential part of a wedding and designing the perfect look for the brides is my number one priority. I want them to feel like the most beautiful women in the world on their big day.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I come from a family of achievers and we are all extremely supportive of one another. I was taught to work hard and success will follow but the person who made me believe in myself was definitely my husband. He is my biggest cheerleader and I would have never come this far if it weren’t for him. My husband helped me recognize what my passion was and gave me the confidence to follow my dreams and it didn’t matter if I failed as long as it brought me joy. He helped me come out of my shell and recognize my worth.
