Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Brunsell.
Heather, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I majored in Biology. I never had any intention of getting in to the event planning industry nor did I even know it was something I would enjoy. When I planned my own wedding in 2013, all of that changed. I loved the organization and the details and of course, wedding day. I wanted more of that and to give those beautiful moments to as many brides as I could. After working for an established event planning company as an Assistant Coordinator, I launched my own business in late 2016. Since then I have been the Lead Coordinator for almost 20 weddings and events and assisted on the big day to a many more. I am continually learning something new about design, event management and even about myself on every event. In 2018 alone my company has over 20 events booked and I cannot wait to get to know each of my clients and to be a part of their event whether it is planning the entire party on their behalf or managing on event day so they can enjoy it without worry or stress.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is event design and building relationships while doing that. My company specializes in weddings but we can do any special event. My favorite part about event planning is watching it all come together on the big day. Through all the planning, there’s no mock up. We do a walk through and we do rehearsal, but there is no trial run with all the vendors, the colors, or the theme. So while I’m planning, or helping to plan the event, we are just using our imagination (and a little expertise). Then on event day, it magically comes together. My purpose is to get that vision from my client, find vendors that support and coordinate with the theme and style of the event and create a cohesive, stylish, dream wedding or event.
One way that I believe my company stands out in the industry is that we really want to get to know each of our clients. We want a relationship, we’re not just another vendor. If I come across a client that wants a coordinator to just come in set up, clean up and leave…that’s not for us. I have incorporated ways through our planning, even if we’re hired for Day Of Coordination (the most popular for our DIY clients), to get to know our clients story, who they are as a couple and their vision for the event. When I started my company, I remember a business coach asking me, “What bothers you most about society today?”. My answer was that everyone is too focused on their phones, they don’t build relationships face to face anymore. Teens don’t know how to sit down and have a conversation, or even talk on the phone. They would rather text. That’s not a relationship. The business coach helped me turn that into my business purpose – to have a relationship with each of my clients’. I am a confidant and someone they can trust for advice, and to make decisions on their behalf on event day.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
It does! Right now the biggest factor changing my role as an artist is the ‘Generation Z’ population. My clients have mostly been ‘Millennials’ but ‘Generation Z’ couples, the oldest being in the early 20’s, are starting to get engaged so that can change how I approach potential clients, how we design together and communicate with each other.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I am on Instagram and Facebook or you can go to my website at www.HeatherBrunsell.com. The best support for me is referrals by word of mouth!
