Today we’d like to introduce you to Haylow.
We’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Ladera Heights. I grew up as a percussionist in my high school band which morphed into a career of nearly 20+ years as a DJ. Throughout my creative career shared in The Bay Area and Los Angeles, my artistic expression has centered around the relationship around music, art, sports, and politics. In addition to my career as a DJ, I have also found multiple passions, including video production, photography, graphic design, and artistic and cultural expression.
We’d love to hear more about your artwork. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
With all of my different passions, the one consistent theme can be summarized into three ideals: preservation, presentation, and documentation. Preserving and honoring the legacy of those who came before me, presenting what I create and encouraging others to do the same, and documenting my story as well as the stories of others.
I want people to know that my art, regardless of the form of expression, comes from a place of love, care and intention, with the idea of promoting the voices, stories and imagery of the untold.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
The automatic and cliche-ish answer is “keep doing what you love” and “money doesn’t matter when you’re doing what you love”, or some version of that. While true, it’s hard for quotes and motivational speeches to keep you going during your darkest hour. Everyone’s situation is different, and out of respect for each situation, there is no advice that I can say that is applicable to each situation. One thing I can say that is general to every issue is to ask for help when you need it and rely on your friends and community for guidance. Your closest friends and family can give you better advice than I could ever do.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
