Check out Erika Lane Enggren’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Lane Enggren.

Erika Lane, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always loved all things creative since I can remember. I was born outside of L.A. but spent my childhood in Southwest Colorado where my parents are from. Nature was one of my first inspirations growing up there, but as I got older human emotion is what fueled my writing. I wrote my first poem at the age of ten when my parents split up and titled it “Love.” I still have it memorized today. I moved back to Los Angeles at the age of twelve, and though I traveled to other places and lived in other places since, I ended up back here where I currently reside on the Westside in Mar Vista. I was published for the first time in middle school and have been a couple of times since then, and am currently working on publishing a book of my own. I studied abroad in Italy after high school and realized travel and seeing other cultures was a huge inspiration to me in my writing. In 2014, I started writing poems in public for people on my 1930’s typewriter. I called it “poetry for the people” and it involves asking people for a theme or word or asking questions and then writing them a poem on the spot. I have traveled to many different states and even countries with my typewriter in tow doing this. In 2016 I began performing with a performance art group called The Night Owl Players where I use my typewriter as a percussive instrument to the beat of live musicians as I am free flowing poetry. I have put my words on murals around the city and have been a part of many collaborative art projects. Writing is a passion I have, and I write almost every single day. I love sharing words with people and resonating to the human experience we all go through.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I kind of went over this in my last answer, but I would say that I mostly create messages of love with my poetry. I am inspired by people, by the things I go through and the things everyone goes through. I like to tap into the collective unconscious and write things that people may relate to. I also am very inspired by the beauty of nature, observing the world on a deeper level. I am the happiest when someone takes a poem from me and tells me it seems as if it was meant for them at that exact moment of what they are going through. I love human connection and want to feel a bond with people I write things for. When I write at home alone and am not performing, I am letting out feelings, and it is a form of therapy for me. I hope to continue to inspire people through my words and inspire something within themselves as well.

How can artists connect with other artists?
Absolutely. I think part of what makes a great artist is the loneliness they sometimes feel. It has definitely been a balance for me of giving my art to the community and also taking time for myself to create. I’d say for artists looking to connect to other artists, see what is going on in your community. There is an art walk in almost every city within L.A., and there are always ways to participate in them. Being around like-minded artists is great fuel for your own art.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I post my poetry almost every day on my Instagram @poetry.lane. If you follow my Instagram or Facebook, I usually post the events I participate in, and I always am accepting commissions for personalized poetry or pieces of art.
