Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Jon Pedersen.
Erik Jon, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Studying mechanical engineering at Purdue University left me with a sense that I needed to explore more creativity. Engineering as a career has taken me many places including Norway, Arizona, Florida, California and Connecticut along the way I have always found my passion to be photography. Leaving the engineering world in 2016 has given me the opportunity to travel and develop my art. Living overseas has also been a great resource for capturing photos that I would not have had the chance to otherwise. I’ve always been excited to capture moments that you can look back on. Of course being an engineer, I love the technology in photography.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I started photography creating art for my walls, mostly landscapes. As I started getting more involved in the business I gravitated to action sports and creating content for businesses and for myself. There is a certain amount of excitement from athletes when you capture them doing something rad in their own sport. As I go forward I’m looking to move more into portraits and people to start narrating a story about themselves and who they represent.
Photography can be more than just a photo, it can tell a story or narrative that the audience can relate to. Currently, I am in the process of creating projects telling stories about everyday normal citizens in different cities in the country.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge is finding your style and niche. I struggle with this all the time. Is my work good enough? Does my style appeal to the mass audience and how do I differentiate my work against the thousands of photographers in LA and the rest of the country. I think we all need to stop thinking this way and just keep shooting content.
