Check Out Duke Dufresne’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Duke Dufresne.

Hi Duke, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a close family, we were looking for a business that we could start and run together. After evaluating various options, we let our love of beer guide us toward opening a small brewery, which we did in 2014. What we thought would just be a “hobby” rapidly grew into a full-time endeavor for my wife and I and our four sons. Since 2014, we’ve expanded five times and our small operation has turned into what we hope will be a successful enterprise for future generations of our family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since we have never owned a business before, we’ve pretty much had to learn everything along the way. On the positive side, we have six of us, each with an equal say in all matters and all decisions, which helps to get differing views and opinions. As a result, I believe we’ve made sound decisions whenever necessary while always balancing the risk vs reward. The struggles we’ve encountered are in line with most other businesses such as maintaining a positive bottom line, even when unexpected challenges arrive (Covid-19).

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Prior to owning our family business, I was an executive at a major Aerospace company with a background in engineering. I was with that company for 27 years and I learned a great deal about technology as well as financial management, human resources, and safety to name a few things. All of that has translated well and provided benefits with respect to our family adventure.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The best place to look for advice is someone that you’ve worked with or had a relationship with since it’s someone you already trust and have confidence in. Another option is local groups of like-minded people such as Chambers of Commerce and numerous non-profit organizations that typically include business leaders on their boards or committees.
