Check Out Dave Gilmore’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Gilmore.

Hi Dave, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with boxing. It’s a sport my grandfather passed down to my dad and my dad passed down to me. After many very successful years in corporate fitness for countless fitness companies and gyms, I finally decided to specialize in boxing, the sport that has always been a part of who I am. I’m blessed to now be able to connect with people through the sport I love.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a private business, I’m not in charge of just the training. I’m responsible for sales, admin, marketing, everything. It takes some growing pains learning to wear many hats. Before I settled down in one location, I was all over LA in traffic all day from client to client. It was very exhausting. I’m grateful that I located my business in Silverlake and over the last 3+ years have grown it into a very successful business that has had the opportunity to help many people here in this neighborhood.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in boxing technique and conditioning. I train in LA. There are obviously many dynamic trainers in this town. I don’t think I’m the worlds greatest trainer, I think I’ve been in and around boxing for over 50 years and I can look at anyone’s technique and help them improve upon it. I have a gift for taking even an absolute beginner, teaching them step by step the mechanics of a movement, then running and critiquing it until they’ve perfected it. After a few weeks, it begins to make sense and soon they become proficient, get in great shape, and have an even better time! In so many ways boxing is a metaphor for life. You can learn a lot about yourself through boxing. I have a knack for helping people do just that.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the weather. I know that’s the obvious answer, but for my business it makes a night and day difference. Where I’m from (Washington DC) the fitness business is very seasonal. Late fall and winter are dramatically slower. In LA’s climate people exercise year round and are MUCH more health conscious. In addition, the film industry plays such a significant role for me because I do so much work with people preparing for roles or getting their body in “fighting shape” for upcoming projects. “The industry” literally fuels my business. The traffic here has been my one gripe but now that I train exclusively in Silverlake it’s not a factor any more thank goodness.
