Check Out Daniel Baptiste’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Baptiste.

Daniel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins in 2017 when I launched a streetwear brand called Usual Suspects. The brand composed mainly of screen printed (and sometimes embroidered) hoodies, t-shirts, and hats. One year from my initial launch, I wanted to include cut and sewn garments into my collections to make my brand more appealing, but I lacked the capitol and knowledge of apparel manufacturing. In 2018, I was gifted a sewing machine for my birthday and immediately began practicing designing bags and pants. I remember taking a sewing class in middle school where we made pillows and other small accessories but at the time, I didn’t realize that I can create my own clothing; only for it to resurface ten years later. As I started to get better at making pants and bags, I met my mentor in 2019 who helped me perfect my sewing abilities. With consistency and determination, it brought my craft to a new atmosphere.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles I faced was being confident that what I was doing was going to work. On top of that, while I was with my mentor, I sacrificed having a job to learn more about the industry and how to sew. The sacrifice paid off in the end, but at the time I faced financial hardship.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design menswear and womenswear garments and my specialty is mainly working with denim. I am mostly known for my shimmer jean jackets and jeans along with my USUAL SUSPECTS hoodies. I believe what sets me apart from others is the fact that everything I make is made from scratch. I enjoy the process of sitting behind my sewing machine and constructing garments.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think what surprises people the most is the fact that I did not go to school for fashion or design. I am 100% self-taught.
