Check out Carolyn Liesy’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Liesy.

Carolyn, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am not interested in this being about me and my work per se. I wanted to do something to help March for Our Lives. I came up with an idea for a pop-up show called Don’t Shoot Me Down, an artful dialog about guns in American culture.

I’m under the gun. I got shot down. It’s a blast! A shot in the dark. Trigger happy. You are in his sights. Bang for the buck. Don’t shoot me down. The gun idiom fills the American language.

The first show will be Saturday, September 1, 6-9pm & Sunday, September 2, 1-5pm
Shockboxx Gallery, 636 Cypress Ave., Hermosa Beach, CA

The second one will be on Friday, October 26, 6-9pm & Saturday, October 27, 1-5pm
The Loft, Mesa and 4th, San Pedro, CA.

Right now, I am looking for art which needs to be about gun culture in America. So far, I have received some fascinating and clever work. I am still looking for more.

I wanted an audio component to the show so my son-in-law, who produces the radio show Reveal, is going to help me produce that. It will be a series of facts and the way you access it will be to use your smart phone to scan a file. Shockboxx is a very fun venue in Hermosa that does regular shows and is run by artists Mike Collins and Laura Schuler. The Loft is an old warehouse and currently run in part by artist Michael Stearns. Both are wonderful places to have a show. And since I have really stuck my neck on, Peggy Zask, executive director of SoLA gallery and an artist herself is the juror.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
While I am a printmaker and actively working, I am not responding to have an article “all about me.” I want to focus on the shows and helping March for Our Lives.

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Southern California has a lot of artists so it is a bit difficult to find a niche.
