Check out Carla Wyzgala’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Wyzgala.

Carla, aka Carlations, is a watercolor pin-up illustrator of all things pretty ladies and her Skull Masquerade series, interlacing beauty with the bones of the beast. Using vintage pin-ups and the art of burlesque as inspiration for an unapologetic balance between femininity and strength, her work is a celebration of the female form. And as the co-creator and illustrator of Hidden Door Comics, she is proud to hold on to a traditional medium and story-book influences within the big-muscled and digitally-colored comic book industry, one watercolor fairytale graphic novel at a time.

Carla currently lives in Long Beach, California, but will always also call Chicago home. She is a member of the Bad Apples Artist Collective and has been showing her artwork internationally at galleries and comic conventions since earning a BFA from the American Academy of Art, Chicago in 2009.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My weapon of choice is Winsor & Newton watercolors on Arches hot-pressed (smooth surface) 140 lb watercolor paper with a few cheap watercolor brushes. Illustrating everything from tear-streaked warrior women in bone masks to the classic beauty of a Dita Von-Teese inspired lady of burlesque, I aspire to show beauty in all varieties of the female form.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Making an impact on other artist and art admirers, whether to inspire courage or to pick up a paint brush, is an accomplishment. I feel success simply from others interest in the splendor of traditional watercolor.
