Check Out Britney McFarlane’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney McFarlane.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2009, I graduated from Marinellos and immediately began working as an assistant at a salon named DayDreams. During my experience as an assistant, I learned a lot about hair health; Particularly with black women. I had never seen so many black women with long, healthy, natural hair. The hairstylist I worked for at that time was big on how her clients maintained their hair at night and stressed the fact that our (black women) hair was so fine and delicate. After branching off on my own, I began to focus on the diverse textures and coils of curly hair. This is where I found my own passion for natural hair health and the biggest question; “Why do black women suffer from hair breakage?”. After studying my clients and their hair routines, I noticed that majority of them were not incorporating a nightly protection method. In fact, there just wasn’t many options for them.

Most of them were sleeping on cotton pillowcases or battling to keep a satin scarf on through the night. This sparked my idea to create my own stylish, silk, protective head cap known as a “Bonnet”. Today I own my own business that focuses solely on creating exclusive headwear for women with curls. Curls N’ Bonnets has evolved; not only the product itself, but also teaching women how to manage, prep, and maintain a healthy curl pattern at home.. I’ve created tutorials based around Curls N’ Bonnets sleepwear collection that give my followers a step by step visual on how to prep their hair with the bonnet. I am proud to say I am not only living out my passion, but I’ve created some pretty stylish bonnets to help carry my passion to the next level.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started Curls N’ Bonnets in the middle of the pandemic. When I first began, it was hard finding decent fabrics because everything was online. I couldn’t feel the material or see it up close, which is very important to me while picking my next style. Everything I ordered took at least two weeks to come in. Even then, you don’t know exactly what you’re getting. It was a HUGE obstacle because I really wanted to produce quality and style that I would want to wear myself. I could never just “throw something together” and sell it. It’s not me. My standards for my product take a much more hands on approach.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist at heart. I love hair. I started when I was 13, practicing braids on my grandmother and cousins. In high school, I would charge the girls $50 for almost 10 hours worth of work on the weekends. I guess you can say I was my first employer. It’s how I would pay for my clothes and activities. After finishing school, I would work in different salons, movie sets, music videos, fashion shows, wherever I could pick up a job doing hair. I’m most known for styling hair all over the valley… I’ve met so many people this way. I specialize in natural hair. Curls mostly. I’m most proud of the way I built myself from scratch. From a high school entrepreneur to now a successful business owner. And I’ve done it while remaining true to myself. What sets me apart is my knowledge in hair care, the way I treat people, not just my customers. My particularity with what I produce to others, how much I care about quality and my accountability for everything I produce. I like to see my style as “Classic”.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
When I was younger, I had plans to become a nurse. My mother always suggested it because I was really gentle with people and I would cater to sick family members. So I would always tell people that I was going to be a nurse.
