Check out Anne Chau Grattan’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Chau Grattan.

Anne, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m an optometrist who recently picked up on hand lettering and calligraphy when I started planning my wedding in October 2017. What originally started as a way for me to decorate my wedding became a full-blown hobby where I couldn’t stop practicing and finding more ways to grow in. I calligraphied everything I could think of for the wedding and home decor, and now I’m trying to find ways to continue using what I learned to help others also find an appreciation for the field. I feel really blessed to get to do what I love as an eye doctor and making sure people maintain good eye health, but I feel even more lucky to get to come home to practice more calligraphy every day!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As I’m starting this new art, I am taking on any project people are asking of me. If I can find a way to make it, I will do it! I’ve done a lot of signs on all different surfaces (chalkboard, acrylic, wood), cake toppers, place cards, personalized tote bags, but my favorite thing to do is probably addressing wedding invitations or just calligraphy-ing quotes that inspire me.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I define success as just doing what you love and doing what makes you happy! I don’t think you can really go wrong if you like what you’re doing and what you’re making. There may always be people who may not like what you produce, but you’re only going to be attracting the people who appreciate your work and those are going to be your best clients.

I think the most important thing to success as an artist is to never stop growing and learning. I think that goes for any field. I know as an optometrist, I’m always trying to find ways to be better at my job because you can never know it all in the health care field…it’s just changing and growing too much! I feel like that’s the same way in any art form — you can never finish “practicing” and there’s always more you can learn to enhance your skills. So, keep on learning!
