Check Out Andrea Barrera’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Barrera.

Hi Andrea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sugar cookies were the biggest surprise and blessing in my life during a time when I really needed to create, relieve stress, and discover my passion. I iced my first cookies back in April 2018 purely out of curiosity and have been obsessed ever since. Every day after that, I spent all my time watching YouTube videos, bookmarking other “cookiers” posts, and practicing non-stop. Over the last three years, my cookies have been a part of a business launch, a wedding, an interview, and countless other special occasions. I’ve only been able to grow because of my incredible support system and amazing clients. Both groups constantly encourage, recommend, tag, repost, you name it and I can’t stress enough how much that does for a small business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. Because I 100% support the business by myself, I have a full-time job Monday through Friday. To have a small business that has to also be your “side hustle” is challenging in so many ways. As much as I would love to relax after a long day of work, it’s straight to the kitchen to either prep dough for an order, bake dozens of cookies or ice for hours on end. Not to mention I am also the social media manager, the customer service agent, and the buyer if you will.

Another struggle is that cookies and royal icing require a precise science and factors out of my control such as the weather, old oven glitching, etc., can really make or break the outcome.

COVID definitely didn’t help. If there are no parties, turns out there were no real need for custom cookies.

It certainly has not been a smooth road but all the best ones aren’t.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Clark Street Cookies offers custom, royally iced sugar cookies for clients throughout Southern California. I’m proud of the fact that so many people trust me to create something that’s included in their significant life moments. I have been a part of more than 100 birthdays, around 50 baby showers/gender reveals over 30 bridal events, and so on through my cookies.

The reaction I get when I show a client their completed order is the best feeling in the world. I love to go above and beyond for my clients both in designing a set as well as in enhancing it. I also have worked hard to nail down my sugar cookie recipe so that it tastes even better than it looks – slightly crispy on the outside with a soft, moist inside. My goal is always for my clients to feel proud when they give the gift of my product or place my cookies out on their dessert table and I’d like to think I achieve that.

What’s next?
I hope to one day run Clark Street Cookies full time and open up a bakery where I’m able to expand my menu, teach cookie decorating classes, and create for the community. In the meantime, I look forward to continue to be a part of so many different special occasions through custom cookies.
