Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Noelle Lund.
Allison, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
From a very young age, I have loved everything to do with being creative through art. I enjoyed the messiness of it all and the ability to use my hands to make something completely new. My mom always encouraged creativity in our home, so I have lots of memories of my sisters and I doing arts and crafts, especially on rainy days. I think that’s probably why I get the urge to be super crafty every time the fall season rolls around. My mom was an elementary teacher for over thirty years and she was always coming up with new ideas for her students. My sisters and I always wanted to try out her ideas as well. We made artwork using paints, paper, buttons, cardboard, and basically anything else we could find around the house. My mom always loved our artwork, of course… even when it looked like a mystery blob of assorted textures and colors! To this day, my mom still has some of our artwork framed that we made when we were in preschool! Once I entered elementary school, I loved learning how to write stories and I was also very focused on having neat penmanship. When I took an enrichment class about calligraphy, I immediately fell in love! Once I saw all the swirls and twirls that could be made with a nib and ink, I knew I wanted to learn how to make these beautiful letters! From that moment on, I’ve been learning and practicing the art of calligraphy. Over the years, I’ve taken several calligraphy classes for adults and most recently I’ve had private lessons with a Master Calligrapher. After many years of doing calligraphy for events for friends and family, I finally decided to open my own business in 2018!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create calligraphy for all of life’s celebrations; including engagements, weddings, graduations, baby showers, anniversaries, birthdays, and retirements. These are all such important milestones in people’s lives so I am honored when my calligraphy and art become a keepsake that is cherished for years. I realize that not all of my calligraphy becomes a keepsake because most people don’t save wedding envelopes that are hand-lettered! But, believe it or not, some do! Last year, I addressed all of my holiday envelopes in calligraphy and it was so nice to hear that some people actually saved the envelope! I think people are drawn to calligraphy because it adds that personal touch of something that is handmade. When I have done “live lettering” calligraphy events, I am always amazed at how delighted people are to see their name written before them in calligraphy. I think people are so accustomed to seeing their names typed by a computer that they are surprised to see it written so differently in calligraphy. For me personally, when I’ve attended weddings, I’ve found that there’s just something special and elegant about seeing a seating chart, place card,or menu that has been hand-lettered in calligraphy. When I work with couples getting married, I always encourage their input because I want the calligraphy to represent their style and I want it to have meaning. It’s always a wonderful feeling to collaborate with my clients and to create something for them that is truly one-of-a-kind!
How can artists connect with other artists?
Social media has actually surprised me in terms of how supportive it has been. Many of the calligraphers and artists are not just about sharing their own work, they are also about supporting and encouraging other artists. There are also so many networking groups that actually meet in person, instead of online, so that real connections can be made. As I continue to grow my business, I’m looking forward to opportunities to collaborate with others and I’m also looking forward to connecting with a local charity. It would be an honor to create calligraphy and artwork for a good cause!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I am constantly updating my website with new projects and ideas. I also show my latest work on Instagram and on Pinterest. People can support my work by following me on social media and by keeping me in mind for anyone looking for a calligrapher for weddings, baby showers, or any of life’s celebrations! I also enjoy doing “live lettering” events because I get to meet new people and share my love of calligraphy with them!
