Check out Alexis McElwee’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis McElwee.

Alexis, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always had a love of photography. Even as a little girl, I had a camera in my hand, taking pictures of things I always wanted to remember. In high school, I took my first photography class and it really opened my eyes to the way images can capture a feeling and bring things to life. I really just gravitated towards things that were visually inspiring and beautiful. Then years later when I had my first baby, I wanted to stop time and remember everything just the way it was. My normal point and shoot just wasn’t cutting it, so I pulled out my DSLR and forced myself to learn lighting, shooting manually and editing. Although I honestly didn’t think I was very good, I had a vision of what I wanted my work to look and feel like. My husband saw my passion and really encouraged me to pursue photography as a little business. So I started mentoring from some of the best photographers in the biz, and just practicing like crazy. I fell in love with shooting maternity, newborns and families. And now I’m happy to say this little biz has grown into something I really love and am proud of.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Photography is my passion and my art. I love to capture the beauty of pregnancy, fresh new babies and beautiful growing families. I am inspired by the beautiful soft colors in nature and soft light. I didn’t want my work to be overly posed, but instead something real, clean, natural and beautiful. Something you can look back on and feel like you are right in that moment all over again. I draw inspiration from my clients and their interactions. Capturing them in a real, documentary way. I like to create photographs that are beautiful, that make you feel something. I want my clients to forever have these sweet memories of their lives. I love that I can be the person to capture that. And I love that I can be creative and really use my vision to tell a story. And I want people to know that I put my heart into every session and every image.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
For me, success is not a number but a feeling. A feeling of connection with my clients that brings out their beauty. Leaving a session with a huge smile on my face and feeling like I’ve just hung out with a new best friend and chatted about all things motherhood. I love when clients tell me they had so much fun and loved their images. I also feel like it’s essential to stay true to your own style and not follow the crowd. Doing your own thing, always learning and evolving, and finding inspiration where you see it.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Mostly you can find me on Instagram @alexisalanaphoto, posting my recent sessions and showing behind the scenes of my work, and daily life as a mama to three little ones. I love connecting and sharing with my clients. I also have a Facebook page and website, which is in the process of an exciting revamp.
