Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Lang.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I took a photography class in college and very quickly, I realized that creating visual art with the talented individuals in my community is what I am really meant to do with my life. My background is in fashion but design never gave me the feeling that photography has given me. Because of my love of fashion, I immediately began taking editorial-style portraits with fashion and style as my main focus. Through my work in that world, musicians started contacting me about creating for them and their various projects. Now the majority of my clients come from both fields and most recently, I have made my foray into video work. Creating a safe space for people, particularly women, to feel empowered and beautiful is the most rewarding part of what I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Success does not come without effort. I work on film exclusively so learning that medium in itself came with some struggle. Very early on, I remember having a client and upon developing the rolls from the shoot, I discovered two came out blank. Calling the client and having to disclose this humiliating information is something I won’t forget. Thankfully that is now an extremely rare occurrence and, because of that error, I use multiple cameras as a sort of back-up, so to speak. In addition to technical errors, there is always the struggle of crippling self-doubt that unfortunately comes with the creative turf. We are all our own worst critics. Although it’s not always easy, I have come to appreciate that self-doubt because it’s what fuels my desire to always be better. Once we become totally happy with our work, we stop growing as artists. Mistakes are necessary to move forward in working towards your dreams.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a female film photographer that specializes in all things vintage and nostalgia. My love of film photography comes directly from my affinity for the aesthetics of times passed. Photography brings me great joy because it allows me to revisit the vibrant worlds of disco, mod, etc. any time I want to escape. What I find most exciting is that at the same time, those worlds are of my own creation. What sets me apart from other photographers is that I am a woman in what is mostly a man’s world. The photography industry, and film photography specifically, is dominated by men. I grew up in a very female-centric household and my love and respect for the many facets of what it means to be a woman is inherently reflected through my work. I strive to create a space for women to feel comfortable and free to be unapologetically themselves in front of my lens. There is a certain sensuality in that freedom that is not captured by male photographers. That harmonious connection with my models is without a doubt what I am the most proud of.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My goodness, there are so many things I love about Los Angeles! I was born in Ojai and have been in the LA area my whole life so perhaps I am biased- but I believe we live in the most gorgeous area in the country. The beaches, the mountains, the forests, the desert, everything you could ever want is here. Not to mention the incredible weather you can experience it all in! In addition to its stunning beauty, Los Angeles has such a fascinating, fabulous, rich history. I could truly go on forever about all that has gone on in this crazy, influential city of ours. There once was a time when I couldn’t possibly tell you what I like least about LA, but since this has become the influencer capital of the world that ship has sailed. Unfortunately, our city’s magic has been tarnished by influencer culture- but not enough that it’s gone. Now you just have to look a lot harder to find it.
