Today we’d like to introduce you to Yessíca Torres.
In 2011, Yessíca Torres co-opened H Gallery + Studios in Ventura, California. As co-owner and curator in chief of H Gallery, Yessíca’s contemporary and modern program was a clear break from the conventional art scene that surrounded her. Keeping focused on emerging and mid-career artists, H Gallery’s progressive gallery design and ambitious exhibition schedule were received with immediate regional success. As Yessíca’s artist roster and network grew to an international level, so did her aspirations.
With the belief that art exposure should not be limited by physical location, Yessíca independently established Dab Art in 2014. This distinctive art company is dedicated to enhancing the contemporary art experience for artists, collectors, and viewers in and outside the gallery setting. Dab Art embraces the constant evolution of contemporary art by featuring experimental artists, highlighting innovative techniques and utilizing technological advances. Since it’s initial launch, Dab Art has expanded from regular gallery exhibitions to art publications, artist talks, panel discussions, video profiles, exhibition videos and now, documentary film making; featuring our most remarkable and distinguished artists.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create my exhibitions to be a completely immersive experience. I feel the abstraction of an exhibition is just as important as the artwork being featured. I want the viewers to have an intimate understanding of the collection they came to see. My exhibition concepts are influenced by current contemporary movements and art history along with my affinity for film and music.
My obsession with the artistic method is ultimately what drives me as a curator. The investment I make in artists selected for exhibition or representation goes beyond their physical work. I am more interested in exploring the process and story behind their artwork than the finished pieces. Every exhibition is a new opportunity for viewers to experience high caliber art and explore the minds of the creatives participating.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
As a gallery owner and art consultant, I am often told by artists that their career goal is to “just be successful.”
Just as the creative process, subject matter and medium preference is unique to an individual artist, so is their success. Accomplishments in social media can be quantified in followers, monetary gain through sales and exposure through gallery exhibitions. While these conventional notions are appreciative, I do not believe that is a definitive or universal way to measure the success of an artist.
In my professional experience, an artist who continually works to create new concepts, develop their mediums and push boundaries with their artwork is already successful.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Yessíca still owns H Gallery, which is curated exclusively by Dab Art. Nestled between Malibu and Ojai, H Gallery is now one of the prevailing contemporary art spaces in the greater Los Angeles area, mainly focusing on mid-career to established artists. Yessíca’s rigorous exhibition program highlights the process of contemporary artists beyond the physical applications of medium. Cinematic and culturally iconic references are often cited as a source of inspiration when developing her exhibition concepts. More immersive than simply observational, Yessíca intentionally provokes viewers to somatically consider the artwork on display in her gallery.
In addition to H Gallery, Dab Art curates at two satellite locations, pop-up exhibits and various art events throughout the Los Angeles Area. Our partnership with Arsty has greatly expanded our collector visibility and elevated Dab Art’s status throughout the Southern California art community.
