Art & Life with Sunyin Zhang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunyin Zhang.

Sunyin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
– I started a dessert shop, a Dim Sum restaurant and a jewelry design studio during my undergraduate years.
– I drink milk every day since I was born.
– I love females and adventure.

There are two truths and a lie.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a film director. Most of my work is narrative shorts, focusing on female characters.

Recently, I am thinking about what is beautiful. As we all know, even a short film can cost a lot. I believe that there are an advantage of high production value films. However, it is not what beautiful means to me personally. The definition of beauty is like an aesthetic choice. It should be diversity, which leads to thousands of ways of approaching it. It could be not only artificial lights inside of a studio but also something “ugly” or “imperfect”, such as grainy, shaky, nature light and non-trained actor… if these “ugly” elements serve their purpose and are believable, they will turn to be a beautiful story that really touches the audience.

Beautiful must be different from popular and I am on the way of finding my irreplaceable beautiful cinema language to express the world I sense.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
2 ways:

a. Try searching and applying for as many grant/funding departments as you can;
b. For making films, it doesn’t matter how high-value production it is but what kind of new idea or unique feelings as an audience we can absorb. So, pick up a phone or anything that can record then make it come true.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
They are not able to find online right now, because they are editing or submitting to film festivals. After releasing, I’ll upload it to my Vimeo. If anyone is interested in supporting my work, please contact me on email to donate.
