Art & Life with Samantha Lin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Lin.

Samantha, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started modern calligraphy about two years ago when I was planning for my wedding, since I wanted to DIY some wedding signs and marble coaster place cards for my guests. At first, I tried learning by downloading free practice sheets online, but I became frustrated with my progress. At a friend’s recommendation, I signed up for an in-person workshop, and things just “clicked” there! I was motivated to “practice,” even if I only had 10 minutes a day. I’m currently a full-time physical therapist, but through calligraphy I have discovered my creative side!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create custom hand-lettered pieces for weddings, special occasions, and “just because” moments. Gifting custom items can make someone feel special and loved, even if you gift it to yourself! Some of my wedding services include customized vow books, hangers, place cards, and table numbers. I also make wood signs, mirror signs, acrylic signs, and chalkboards. But really, any thing and any surface you can think of can be hand-lettered and customized!

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?

Honestly, I wouldn’t consider myself a full-fledged artist yet, but I believe success is being you (because no one else is you, and no one else has your vision or perspective) and knowing how to market yourself! Success is also about experimenting, getting outside your comfort zone, and not being afraid to fail.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
