Art & Life with Matt Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Brown.

Matt, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
All the men the in my life have always taking photos, my grandfather, uncle and my dad. My dad was tired of me always using (stealing) his camera so with a subscription to SI I received my first camera. It was love! I’ve never wanted to do or be anything else but a photographer. I went to school for photography. I’ve worked with some great people and in some wonderful places during my career. Long Beach State, OC Register, Cal State Fullerton, Sports illustrated, ESPN, Gatorade, Mizuno, MLB and NBA all have been clients during my career.
It was an odd start but it’s been one heck of a ride.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a photographer, film maker and creator. I will always be a photographer. I’m known for my sports photography. I’ve shot World Series, Super Bowls, NCAA championships, Stanley Cups, and NBA championships. I’ve always tried to put the viewer into my images. In the mid 2000’s I started shooting short films and commercials. It’s giving me a chance to reach a bigger audience and giving me another creative avenue to explore.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
The biggest challenge facing artist today is pay. So many artists are willing to work for cheap and it really hurts the business. I hear from creators how do I get started or I’ll work for free. Internships are major help. Find someone another artist in your filed and talk to they. I would say never work for free. Once you’re the free guy you’re always the free guy.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can see my works on my website or Instagram. 5browncrew. I’m now working for Incipio Technologies as their lead commercial photographer. I’ve kept Cal State Fullerton Athletics as a client, my work can be seen on their site as well,
