Art & Life with Lisa Chamberlain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Chamberlain.

Lisa, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My love of music began while growing up in Minneapolis, MN. My three younger sisters and I took piano lessons from our grandmother and made my public singing debut in a Swedish choir at the American Swedish Institute.

I realized I wanted to be a performer for a living when I was 14 when learning to play Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles;” from then on, I sang and played in any talent show I could find in the Twin Cities.

I studied classical piano performance in college, in addition to attending the Aveda Institute for Cosmetology before moving to Los Angeles to pursue my dream of a career in the music industry.

My time in LA has been spent doing hair and makeup while building upon my acting and singing career. My debut EP, Unapologetic, goes through the ups and downs of a breakup, long term illness and finding my strength again. My faith brought me through pain and loneliness and I am excited to share my story with the world through my music.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a singer-songwriter and actress based in Los Angeles. My style is mainly pop with a soulful style on the piano. When I write song lyrics, I view it as a puzzle I’m trying to solve, moving words around to tell a story (with a few sassy phrases to keep people on their toes!) This fall, I spent some time performing in New York, which has opened my eyes into really connecting with the audience…it’s not just me (and my cat!) in my living room anymore! Personally, writing has taken on a new meaning, and I get inspiration in many ways, both lyrically and instrumentally.

My first EP, Unapologetic, was recorded at Selma Studios in Hollywood with the legendary producer Wayne G. Miller. My musical inspirations for this album were Alicia Keys and Solange, utilizing live instruments to tell a beautiful story in five tracks. I was able to record the piano pieces at Steinway & Sons on a nine-foot concert grand piano – a dream I never knew I had! My goal for this album is for people to connect to the depth of the songs; to know they’re not alone and even when they’re feeling lonely, that healing will come.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
It’s easy and tempting to isolate yourself to work on your craft, but we need people! We were made to live in community with others. Life is so much better with other people for encouragement, growth, wisdom, and support. I think it’s important to challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone to find a group of people who are passionately pursuing similar things that you are.

I have two outlets that fuel my soul: first, my church ZOE at the El Rey Theater every Sunday. It is filled with an incredible group of people who not only love God but are so encouraging and truly want the best for every individual. The other is Los Angeles Song-Writing Collective (LASC), a collective of about 75 singer-songwriters and producers who meet the first Monday of every month and listen to a Q&A with a music industry professional, listen to artists play new material and give feedback, and participate in writing exercises. It’s a great way to feel included in a group and meet other artists who are going through similar experiences.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
The support I’ve received from family and friends has been overwhelming, and I’m so excited to debut this EP with the world! My first single, Reaching, will be released on online streaming platforms on February 1, 2019.
