Today we’d like to introduce you to Juli Kim.
Juli, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a Korean classical dancer/choreographer. Although my educational background is classical music, dance classes were also an important part of my childhood. At age 13, our family moved to Canada making it difficult to continue to hone my Korean dance skills. I began to focus more on music. However, Korean community was small back then and much effort was placed on preserving and introducing Korean culture. Therefore, my Korean dance skill was put to use, helping me to at least sustain my skill.
I continued my classical music training, obtained a Master’s degree in piano performance from USC raised my two children by teaching piano. My musical background helps me to be the choreographer I am. For me, music and dance are one. To me, music is the dance you can hear and dance is music you can see.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is Korean Classical/Fusion Dance. With this genre, I create poetry in motion. My style is very lyrical, fluid and control, of breath/balance, is the core of the technic. The seamless movement creates almost slow motion like effect. Aesthetic is something that cannot be compromised.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Success is not an end; it is means. If I can continue to enjoy creating work and share with the audience, I am successful.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
