Art & Life with Jorge Alvarado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Alvarado.

Jorge, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Originally from Mexico City, I’ve lived in Los Angeles for the last 23 years. Art has always been a part of life, & the light to my existence. As a child, I dreamt of becoming a movie director, but it wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I discovered design. Mrs. Angel, a high school art teacher had suggested I take a studio art class, & so I did. I learned the basics, did the best that I could do, but the instructor noticed that my way of doing things was different. It was her who saw the designer in me during a class critique one day when she called me out & said: “Jorge you’re more of a designer.” As the class went on Mrs. Nichols the instructor had put me on the path to self-discovery. I started off by creating 2-dimensional designs with my photo camera, & photoshop elements. The camera had become my brush, & the computer screen my canvas.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I crate 2-dimensional works of art with my camera, & design 3-dimensional spaces for events. The camera has allowed me to document experiences, & share ideas. Designing 3-dimensional spaces, on the other hand, gives my imagination the ability to take physical form. My reason for creating is to express, & give life to an idea. Whether it be personal, or interpretive. In my work, you’ll find references for my love of architecture, Mid-Century design, & renaissance paintings. At the end of the day one can only hope that people see, & experience the passion in my work.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Those looking to connect with other artists should attend art-driven events.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work lives in the realms of social media, & will occasionally make an appearance at a community event or local art show. For upcoming shows or events please visit my Facebook or Instagram page.
