Art & Life with Jo Darko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo Darko.

Jo, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Music has always been an obsession. I’ve been playing guitar for years – that started me on songwriting and production. I attempt to make my music a synthesis of my experiences. I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by world-class musicians who have enabled me to follow my passion.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a musician. I play guitar and write/produce songs. Mostly about nostalgia, youth, love, drugs, heartbreak… the human experience. I try and create music that communicates something deeper but is still relatable. I’m heavily influenced by classical music, hip-hop… and Cher. I just try and write music that will blow your hair back.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
This is a very broad question… I don’t want to give a general meaningless answer.

I think the arts have always been stratified. I think the conditions will always be difficult for artists. You’re creating something that has no tangible value to society. I think that it’s easier to be an artist these days in that there is more commercial consumption and a lower threshold of accessibility to tools. I think having a successful career is as difficult as ever.

Creating quality art is more difficult than ever (my guess – I’ve only lived once). So much noise.

Cities can invest time and money into quality youth arts education. Education and awareness are essential.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have a couple songs released on streaming platforms. I have a project in progress I’m really excited about. Your biggest support would be reaching out wanting to collaborate.
