Today we’d like to introduce you to Jina Song.
Jina, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
To be honest, I thought I would spend the rest of my life working in front of a computer in an office. As ridiculous as this sounds, I had an instant urge to opened Google and search, “things I can learn with two years of school.” Cosmetology school was an option that came up. Immediately, I emailed the school for a tour. While I was walking around the school, the students looked so passionate and happy to be there. Within two weeks, I was sitting in class for cosmetology school. I was looking for happiness and this seemed like the place to find it. Of course, once I started, it was waves of anxiety because I didn’t even think of doing hair two weeks prior to school. But, for the first time, learning was exciting. Everything I learned at school, it stayed in my head. I didn’t have to TRY to learn. It was just so easy like I was meant to be here. Along the road, I decided to focus on nails instead of hair. I still finished my cosmetology license and passed my test first try! This may be embarrassing but for the first time in my life, I finally finished what I started.
During and after school, I spent my time watching countless YouTube videos, scrolling through nail pictures for hours daily for inspiration, and practiced A LOT to improve my technical skills. But even after all of this, I still wanted MORE. Not because someone suggested I do, but because I REALLY WANTED TO. I wanted to become better because I loved what I was doing and loved seeing my skills grow!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Well.. I do nail art. I enjoy all different kinds of nail art and love that I can create all sorts of designs on the tiny canvas we call nails.
While working, my inspiration usually comes from clients. I like to ask my clients: What do you want? What do you like? How are you feeling today? I have my clients tell me what their preferences are and we work together to make the perfect set! It’s my priority to make sure the clients love them! We can be talking about the same idea but imagine two completely different things. So, I’m always checking. Is this what you want? If not, explain to me again please!
Before I did nails professionally, I would get my nails done all the time. My nails were what I looked at most throughout the day. I know the feeling of having that perfect set. That’s the feeling that I want to deliver to my clients. I want the time with me to be a good experience and I also want that same feeling to stick with them whenever they look at them!
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Always put in time and practice! As a student, I practiced on my friends, family, mom’s friends, neighbors, ANYONE. Don’t be discouraged if something doesn’t come out the way you want. With practice, you will be able to do everything!
