Art & Life with Genie Liang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genie Liang.

Genie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Hi, I’m Genie! I’m an illustrator working in ink and digital mediums. I specialize in a minimalist approach, focusing on creating motion using still lines. Aside from illustrating, I write and draw comics, create stationery and design accessories.

  • 2014, I graduated with high honors Bachelors of Art and Animation.
  • 2015-2017 I worked in mobile gaming company (in SF). I made a living and was able to save up and move.
  • 2018, moved to Tokyo, then Anaheim to follow passions 🙂
  • Since 2018 to the present, illustrating professionally.

Currently, I am based out of Toronto, Canada, and represented in Japan/Asia by Cross World Connections Tokyo. My work has been shown in the U.S., Thailand and Japan through shops and galleries. I feel fortunate to be able to illustrate for my clients!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Life is a series of sensations. They stack up, and we become full of the stuff. Sometimes, overflowing. I want to create things that can make people feel lighter. Maybe something like stepping off the bus after school on a spring day, and breathing in the crispy fresh air.

Like that one scene in the 2000’s Digimon Movie, “Our War Game” (dir. Mamoru Hosoda), when Tai and Matt dive into the computer… That part always gets to me, haha.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Be yourself. Find friends who are also working hard at growing. And find a part-time job to help with finances and life quality.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I run an online store with stationary and minimalist accessories. The sales help keep me working on new collections and comics. Please check it out, thank you.

Also, I am currently working on a slice of life graphic novel for 2021. If you’d like to follow my progress please consider adding me on Instagram and twitter or support my Patreon for monthly mail and special gifts. Thank you 🙂
