Art & Life with EM

Today we’d like to introduce you to EM.

EM, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a British singer-songwriter, classical pianist, actor and activist. I trained as a classical pianist from age four. I performed internationally as a classical concert pianist as a child and received two degrees by the time I was 15. It was a pretty crazy lifestyle!

I’ve also always been interested in acting and started really focusing on it at 13, the same age I began songwriting. From then on, I bounced between acting and music, attending specialist high schools, before going to drama school in New York at 18. I went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and on graduating, moved to LA.

Quickly after moving, music took off and has been my focus for the past two years. Last year I released my debut EP, with GRAMMY-nominated producer Bruce Witkin. “What I Want To Say To You” explores my personal experience of rape, and is dedicated to sexual assault survivors. It received wide critical acclaim, with Hard Rock Café stating: “EM joins artists such as Lady Gaga and Tori Amos in giving a voice to those who need it most.” I have recently completed my 12 track album, “REBORN”, a direct follow up to WIWTSTY, exploring how I regained my strength, sexuality, and power, largely through creativity and music.

REBORN will be out soon and there are many other exciting projects underway!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a pianist, singer, and songwriter. My music is brutally honest, raw and vulnerable. It aims to inspire, uplift and shine a light on the undiscussed. My first EP, “What I Want To Say To You” was about my personal experience of sexual assault and was dedicated to survivors. I released it with a hope of helping survivors to feel less alone, encouraging survivors to speak out, and also to show to the rest of the world the detrimental impact of rape. Music has an incredible ability to make people feel something. We so often read and hear statistics in the news, before hastily moving on with our lives. But if you can make people feel something, their likelihood to stop and take action is much higher.

My 12 track concept album, “REBORN” is a direct follow up from WIWTSTY. “REBORN” holds the message “no matter what you’ve been through, it is possible to make it out the other side and to lead a happy life”.
“REBORN” was created with my band, Em & The Gems. The Gems include bass legend Melvin Brannon Jr. Forté (Booker T. Jones) and drummer Tyler Hammond (Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst).

It feels like a carnival for the senses – now an intimate moment tucked away in an elegant red-light lounge, next to an eruption of vitality and sound that energizes and lifts the spirit. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, “REBORN” is my journey through hell, hope and renewal after surviving a brutal rape. The album explores themes of regained strength, sexuality, power and how music ultimately saved me. The Gems are as mad as I am, so our live show is pretty nuts! I’m all about having fun, going crazy, and fully embracing every part of humanity, not hiding away, and trying to make a difference.

Musically, my style is very unique due to my varied background. “REBORN” features elements of rock, pop, jazz and classical, with a touch of musical theatre.

My mission is to make a difference through creativity and truth while having a blast in the process!

I am currently working on new material, exploring the full human condition, the dark and the light, and how we must embrace all aspects of our humanity. I am trying to rid shame and feel free in the imperfect beings that we are. The new music will be influenced largely by jazz and soul, and although touching on heavy subject matters, will be light, fun and humorous!

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Do what YOU want to do. Have FUN. Follow your intuition. And never work with someone who your instinct is fighting against because you feel they might help you – they’re not right for you. Also, everything happens for a reason – don’t let the rejections knock you down!!! Create, smile, cry, feel, love, live and make a life of making art.
