Art & Life with Christian Grünert and Marta Wrobel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Grünert and Marta Wrobel.

Christian, Marta, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
We are Christian & Marta also known as Grünert+Wrobel +3mm. Marta is a native from Poland, who grew up in the Ruhr Area of Germany and studied Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund. For the love of the city that never sleeps, she moved to New York and worked for a design studio on Broadway. With the experience gained abroad and just a small suitcase, she headed to her next station: Berlin. There she worked for several design studios. Born and raised, Christian has intertwined his passions with West Berlin. He has 16 years of professional experience as a Senior Art Director.

After a few years sharing the adventures of work life as graphic designers, we founded Grünert+Wrobel+3mm. What does Grünert+Wrobel+3mm mean? The name arises from our last names with the addition of +3mm. Having a lot of experience and an affinity for print, we highlighted it by the addition of +3mm. That’s the regular bleed area for print products in Germany. Bleeds in the US generally are 1/8 of an inch, right? Maybe we should take a change of our name in consideration for the future.

As we lived our first big dream Grünert+Wrobel+3mm with various design projects all over Germany, our second big dream, the American Dream, was slumbering as long as we were submitting our application for the Diversity Visa Lottery. That changed completely, when both of us, one after another, were selected at random by the lottery. Summer 2017 we moved from Berlin to Los Angeles, Santa Monica.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Grünert + Wrobel +3mm is focussed on Art Direction, Advertising, Editorial, Corporate, Logo, Web and Event Design. An independent full-service design studio, that offers print and web solutions. Our clients attach importance to individual design and professional advice. We’re meeting the requirements by mixing media. Marta mostly designs on the computer, but she’s thrilled about projects, which allow an experimental and individual operation, for example, painting, drawing, scribbling, collages or handicraft in combination with subsequent digitization of her designs. Her work is characterized by this technique. Through a work experience of 16 years Christian meets the requirements for providing professional advice in marketing issues or overall strategy for advertising campaigns in the online segment (Web & Social Media) and in the classic offline sector (Print).

The combination of our skills and the necessary expertise enables us to satisfy our clients’ specific demands. We provide strategic advice, sustained support and help in branding processes and development of corporate design concepts to our clients, also concepts and design of print media and web and digital solutions. We mostly work with companies in the medical industry, transport and logistics companies, real estate companies, politics, public institutions or non-profit organizations.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The markets in graphic design have changed. More and more photo agencies sell stock photos, vectors and illustrations for a few dollars. Nowadays almost everybody has access to graphic software and can create logos and sell them for $50. Many graphic designers sell their services at dumped prices. Quantity instead of quality. That is not making life easier for graphic designers, illustrators, photographers and creatives.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
