Art & Life with Chris Bader

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Bader.

Chris, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Art has always been important to me. Growing up, it was from the sidelines as a lover versus as a maker. Then I studied and became a jewelry designer for well over a decade. While I certainly enjoyed that, I noticed that when I was shooting the images of my own jewelry work, I had a different kind of thrill. Things clicked into place and I felt artistic immediacy taking product photographs rather than the more languid design processes. My art was right in front of me.

I paid attention to that “inner voice” and I started shooting photographs seriously, all the time. I devoted myself to studying under mentors, taking workshops nationwide and learning from internationally acclaimed photographers who had expertise to share. I committed to mastering the newest camera technology and mastering the craft. Deliberately and with purpose, my energy and creativity were finally in alignment!

In photography, I am able to quickly realize my artistic vision; my eyes move faster than my hands did when I was a jewelry maker. When I have my camera in hand, I am in the moment, I am an artist who quickly makes my vision happen and I can contribute and deliver that art to the world with time as a great and spectacular currency.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a portrait photographer, versatile and caring. I give you your reflection, show you your beauty. I give you moments that will never go away, imagery that is biographical in nature as it depicts your lifetime for your legacy, your family; it’s your rich, visual history. I shoot you engaged in your passions.

I enjoy shooting without a pose, I want to see and shoot you with natural and fluid glances. I am a sports and lifestyle photographer who relies on making super-fast choices when I depress my shutter so I catch slivers of real moments in your day, the golf ball through the air after your swing, the cyclist who moves on the course, the surfer catching that wave, etc. I am a dog and horse photographer where, as an animal lover myself, I am patient and I proceed with a kind and open presence so I can capture imagery that is up close and personal with our animal friends. I take the same photos of animals as I do people; looking at faces and bodies and muscles and features that are so familiar to our touch and now showing you their beauty in the moment.

In summary, I am a portrait photographer. I take photos of subjects. I see emotion in split seconds. I see you in your life, with whomever you want to be photographed with. I am eager to show truthful beauty, even if it confuses the eye, or disturbs the eyes but images that bring you to a pause.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The amount of visual imagery is vast. Everyone has a camera on their phones. Yet remember, not everyone is an artist.

My advice is simple:  You must shoot what you love and not worry about where you fit in with the world.  You make your world. You be your images. You just shoot. And enjoy yourself. People will delight in your energy.
