Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Maye.
Charles, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have been drawing since I was in elementary school, I loved all animals and bugs, the weirder the better, and would use them as subjects in my art. I would always draw creatures from my imagination and create backstories and worlds for them to exist in. I didn’t take art seriously until I got to college, before then art was just a hobby. I decided I wanted to pursue a career in animation after high school and started to build my portfolio. I later got accepted into the animation program at California State University of Long Beach where I received my bachelors. I am currently a freelance animator and illustrator and work on projects for various studios.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’ve always been inspired by the amazing minds of Tim Burton, Shel Silverstein, and Klasky and Cusp. The creativity of these artist has helped build me into the artist I am and want to eventually become. With these icons to inspire me and my passion to bring my characters to life, animation has always been my favorite form of art and is what I want to contribute to the world. I want to create a television series that will teach and inspire generations with the use of the loveable characters I create. The characters I create are typically creepy creatures with a heart of gold, and I use them to teach people that true beauty is on the inside.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Life for artist has never been easy so you have to continually work on your craft as well as get out of your comfort zone and try different mediums.
