Art & Life with Amy Hagan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Hagan.

Amy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up a little outside of Portland, OR. I fell in love with acting at a young age while laughing out loud watching Drake & Josh…and also when I performed with Missoula Children’s Theatre. But I felt like doing acting as a career was unreachable. I got into the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) where I moved to LA and decided I needed to give acting (my dream) a shot. After graduating with my BFA in Acting I got into improv and stand up. I performed on the iO West Main Stage and at the Comedy Store. I now focus on film and tv, and have done many short films and some commercials. I fell in love with Crossfit after graduating AMDA. Because of my love for Crossfit I was able to book a commercial where I played a Crossfit athlete. I have been doing many fitness shoots along side studying acting at the AFA Studio (Actor’s for Actor’s), with Chelsea Ricketts and Abbie Cobb. Recently I got to play a drug addict in a short scene and had a blast. I am also focusing on youtube where I have a vlog channel with a friend where we review different coffee shops in LA. I also have comedy channel with another friend. I play an awkward, crazy cat lady, who does Crossfit. Aside from acting and fitness I enjoy traveling and helping others. I have helped out at a Younglife camp in the Czech Republic twice with my church, and going for the third time this summer. I enjoy building relationships with others and it’s wonderful being able to make friendships with people from different countries. Traveling all over the US and to other countries is something I plan to do in the near future. Along with hiking the John Muir Trail, which will hopefully lead to hiking the Pacific Crest Trail someday. There is so much to explore and accomplish in this world!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am actor. I love comedy so that’s why I started doing a lot of youtube. When I am not booking acting jobs I like to make Instagram stories and my own YouTube videos to make myself and others laugh. I am also creating a healthy lifestyle for myself with clean eating and fitness. I am not here on this Earth to be average and go to a job I hate. I moved to LA to achieve a career I love. It takes time and lots of dedication but with the right mindset I believe people have the power to achieve great things. Small steps and goals is the way to achieve. I recently competed in California’s Strongest Woman and without the training and goals I set along the way I would have never been able to compete and win events at my size. Dedication is key. In my art/craft I am not afraid to be myself and act like a weirdo. In the acting world you have to in order to be seen. I enjoy being odd and making people think or share a laugh with someone. I love in acting when I can make a person feel something like when I feel great emotions when watching a wonderful movie. Living in LA has been fun but also has had many struggles. Becoming a working actor is a lot harder than I ever thought but I love the challenge, even though it involves working the most random odd jobs to get there. I have many weird jobs stories, just ask me. Acting is not like any other job, there is always something to improve on and I love being able to grow and improve myself. I just finished editing my fitness reel so I am excited to see what type of acting/fitness jobs I will book next. I am even considering training for an Iron Man one day. But hey after qualifying for the Boston Marathon this year it all seems possible!

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what quality do you feel is most helpful?
I define success as when you fall you don’t take that as a failure but a growth opportunity, you learn how you can do better next time. Being successful is learning from your mistakes. Having a positive, go-getter attitude and staying motivated and determined when the going gets tough is the key to success as an artist or athlete, or really in life… Because in the acting world you will definitely lose a lot more than you will win so keeping your head up is huge!
