Art & Life with Alexander Onley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Onley.

Alexander, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born, raised and currently live in Long Beach, California. My collegiate studies focused on interior design. I did not attend art school, but my first and enduring passion has been drawing and painting for nearly 30 years. Travel – and the unfamiliar places, languages, cultures, history and nature that comes with it – is my passionate and continued education.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My paintings stem from my travel photographs. I use them as subject matter for a series of drawings, which are then used as reference during painting. The basis of content begins when I stand in a place that possesses some kind of significant quality – a truthful experience of visual drama. The paintings are the result of a distillation, and the method is abstract analogy. Relationship to environment, natural and man-made, is complex. Interestingly, it seems both “in the moment” and timeless. My work is an individual formal approach to that relationship.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Meaningful art isn’t made by paying attention to an art trend or “ism”. Don’t believe everything the “expert” critics write and say. Just because the Emperor wears new clothes doesn’t mean you have to.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can find my email address, or DM, at I welcome those who have an interest in my work – arrangements can be made to meet up at my Long Beach studio. If you like an artist’s work, tell them why you like it, and be specific!
