Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Noh.
Sage, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began to lose weight in college, down to 109 pounds after my freshman year. I knew I had to change the way I ate and how I lived my life, balancing school and work. In retrospect, I had an illness. I mistakenly thought I was eating well by consuming low amounts of calories and working out as much as I possibly could. I was an undergraduate student at New York University and took what I was learning from my pre-med prerequisites and became a trainer soon thereafter. Soon a hobby became a passion which turned into a career!
Has it been a smooth road?
In 2005 I was accepted for a doctorate program at the University of Southern California for physical therapy. I decided to put my personal training career path on hold, eventually to work with athletes in a rehabilitation format. Few years later, my mother fell ill and was diagnosed with leukemia which was not only the biggest obstacle in my professional career but my life as a family man. I became the bone marrow donor for my mother’s transplant. Due to circumstance, I had to spend a lot of my time for the next two years in Seattle, through the treatments, transplant, and recovery periods. I’m very happy to say she’s alive and more beautiful than ever and the experience gave me perspective on everything including my professional life. I truly can say I’m a better man and a better trainer from the lessons I’ve learned and the support I received from my family and wife.
What are your plans for the future?
Excited to share that on August 20th, I’m opening up a second location in Glendale called Sage Fitness Group (900 W. Glenoaks Blvd, Glendale CA 91202, 818-930-9688). It will be a group class equivalent of the private personal training studio, currently open at 1150 N. Brand Blvd, Glendale CA 91202. It will feature a dedicated TRX room with 14 TRX units on two stations. The main floor will be used to teach our other classes, Sage Strength, Sage Yoga, Kickboxing and Boxing, Tris and Thighs, A.M & P.M. Power hour, and Ab Blast 50! Next year, there are plans to add cycling classes among others to the schedule. Each class starts at $12. It’s a great value for anyone looking to get specialized attention in a small group setting. Clients training at Sage Fitness with myself or one of our independent trainers will receive the lowest class rate as well, giving great incentive to supplement their private lessons with calorie burning small group classes.
— I’d love to welcome VoyageLA readers to our free day of classes on August 20th and they can mention this article to receive a two for one class discount as well! —
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
The hardest moment of my career and in life was when my Mother was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. I proudly was the bone marrow donor and the process of the transplant and the months of recovery for my mother forced me into a decision which was very easy to make. I put a hold on my career as a personal trainer in Los Angeles and moved up to Seattle to take care of my family. It was the most rewarding moment of my life. It also became the catalyst to where I am today as a trainer, gym owner, and as a person. The experience humbled me and gave me undying motivation to pursue a dream I had since college of opening a personal training studio. I truly believe Sage Fitness and Sage Fitness Group would not exist if I wasn’t blessed to go through the experience. My mother is alive today, 6 years post-transplant and more beautiful than ever. I’m happy to share with VoyageLA her story and how something so devastating can result in the ultimate happiness.
Do you ever just stop and think WOW – I’ve made it?
The moment I realized I had achieved my professional dream was when the main sign for Sage Fitness went up. I remember the time and exact date, October 12th 2014, 6:40am! I definitely cried and had a laugh and proudly state those facts! I’ve been lucky to have a successful personal training career and building life long relationship with my clients. But the moment the studio’s sign went up with the name Sage Fitness displayed, that was a palpable feeling and the confirmation I’ve come a long way.
