Conversations with the Inspiring Tracy Sandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Sandler.

Tracy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been a lifelong sports fan, and I didn’t feel that there was content geared towards women like me, women who love sports and are knowledgeable about sports but still enjoy the lifestyle aspects of sports. With that in mind, I started 49ers Fangirl covering the team I love and creating lifestyle content and content that took fans beyond the locker room. From there, we became Fangirl Sports Network, with a Fangirl for every NFL and NBA team. Personally, I am credentialed by the San Francisco 49ers and am covering my first Super Bowl.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing is ever entirely smooth, but for the most part, it has been without any major bumps. There have been learning experiences, we’ve tried different types of content to see what works and what doesn’t, but all in all, it’s been amazing. I would tell young women starting their journey to know their strengths, know their weaknesses, and surround themselves with people who enhance what they can do. Listen to constructive criticism and be open to ideas, but also have confidence in what you’re doing. There’s a difference between constructive criticism and a hater. Know that difference.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Fangirl Sports Network story. Tell us more about the business.
Fangirl Sports Network is known for creating content that inspires, informs, and makes you laugh. As a brand, we cover all the major happenings in the world of sports, and team coverage is created for fans by their Fangirl. We are different in that our content is geared towards the female fan and is team specific. We are known for our 5 Fun Facts video and written content and our Get My Job Podcast, in which I sit down weekly to talk with a prominent woman in sports about her journey, any obstacles she has faced, and advice she has for women who work in, or want to work in, the sports industry.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
More and more opportunities are available every day. 49ers’ assistant coach Katie Sowers will be the first female coach to coach in a Super Bowl. Turn on the TV or look in a press box and you see more and more women covering teams and sports generally. The key is for women to support women and build each other up. We are better and stronger together. The more we work together to create opportunities, the more there will be, which is a huge part of what we are doing at FGSN.
