Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista and Kelvin Ramirez.
Krista and Kelvin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Kelvin and I met dancing. It has always been a part of our lives together. We are both professional dancers and our dream was to make a living doing what we love. When a friend asked us to choreograph her wedding dance, we had the time of our lives working with the couple. The idea was born and 1 referral turned into 2, then 5 and on and on. As Your Night Choreo began to take shape, we got engaged and went through our own wedding. Having gone through the wedding process, we understand the stress that couples go through and our vision became clear. We wanted to create a business that not only taught first dances that are one of a kind but gives couples a happy respite from wedding stress! We keep the lessons casual and treat it like a date night. To this day, our favorite part of the job is meeting amazing people in Los Angeles and giving them a chance to look at each other’s eyes and work together learning skills that will last forever.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest challenge has been to totally reboot the wedding dance industry. Learning a wedding dance brings out visions of stiff box steps and grooms counting to themselves as they avoid stepping on their bride’s feet. We want to throw out those old ideas and bring in fresh moves and dances that couples have just as much fun learning as they do on the dance floor at their wedding. Dance lessons are a new, small niche of the event business and we are working every day to create more attention to our industry.
Please tell us about Your Night Choreo.
Your Night Choreo is a custom event choreography business. We specialize in first dances, parent dances, same-sex weddings, and entire bridal parties. We offer dance lessons that range from learning a few impressive moves the week of your wedding to preparing a multi-song mashup that blows wedding guests away! We are known for creating dances that feel organic, are fun to dance to, and making our couples feel at ease and stress-free during lessons.
As a husband and wife team, we bring both a male and female perspective to the lessons. We can easily demonstrate moves that are difficult to do with only one instructor. We also bring a sense of fun to the lessons because it feels more like a double date than formal dance lessons. Having come from a professional dance background, we bring our vast experience to the dance floor. We draw from Ballroom, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Salsa, Bachata, and Swing dance experience to choreograph inventive dances from all genres.
We are incredibly proud of the relationships we have forged with couples. We have couples returning to us after their weddings to take more lessons because they had so much fun! We get to meet people in one of the happiest times of their lives and feel so lucky to be a part of their events. Creating memories for them and being able to maintain relationships after the event is something that sets us apart and gives us our proudest feeling.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Krista’s favorite childhood memory goes back to dancing. I remember one year when I was 12 years old, there was a huge blizzard that closed schools for a week. (On the East Coast) We were able to spend almost the whole week snowed in at our dance studio. It was an endless slumber party filled with dance all day long, no school, and being with your best friends nonstop!
Kelvin’s favorite memory was visiting his family in Columbia. He grew closer to relatives he had never met and it was dancing with family in Columbia that sparked his love of Salsa and Bachata. Every Ramirez family event includes dancing and it was in Columbia that Kelvin’s love of dance came alive.
