#LadyBoss: redefining what a boss looks like

Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?

Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.

We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.

We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes

Jana Barakat | Singer & Graphic Designer

The best way to overcome any challenge is by trying your best. Accepting failure as part of life’s journey and always facing them with a positive attitude!

Sammy Jo | “Body Positive Model”

The best advice I have for someone who is facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable is to take it one step at a time. Conquer little challenges so it doesn’t feel so hard. Before you know it, you’ll be able to look back at how far you’ve come and the challenge will feel easier to conquer… and know that you’ve been through hard times before, you’ve come out on the other side stronger than ever, and you will again this time! “This too shall pass.”

Lee Mintz | Luxury Real Estate Agent

I feel like there isn’t a challenge that someone can not achieve .  If you work hard, if you’re consistent,  if you’re passionate, if you’re dedicated,  if you want it you can achieve it.

Kiaundra Jackson | LMFT- America’s #1 Relationship Therapist

Don’t be afraid to seek professional help. You do not have to go through the most difficult times of your life alone. Receiving help from an objective person can be the link needed to free you from your current challenge.

Marilyn Cervantes | Real Estate Group

One advice that I will give would be to stay focus and don’t loose track of your goals. There will always be obstacles but they will only make you a stronger better You.

Yae Kinard | Model

Do something you won’t regret about.

Taylor Morton | Lifestyle Blogger

The challenge is only temporary but the lessons you learn from it will be some that you will never forget.

Michelle Macedo | Actress and Singer Songwriter

No matter how hard it gets, just try not to make decisions out of fear.

Elizabeth Lip | Actress & Digital Influencer

Step by step approach always helps: start with googling “insurmountable”

If you’re going through something you think you can’t get through, talk. Say everything you feel immediately when you feel it. It’s the case of the student who asks the question in class, 10 other kids had the same problem but were afraid to speak up. Be the person who isn’t afraid to fail so you can in turn help others, join a community, and learn to be bold in the face of adversity.

Victoria Burkhardt | Yoga instructor

This year has been particularly hard: the death of my brother from a tragic accident, moving across the country and separating from my husband of 12 years. It all kept unraveling. All I could do to stay afloat was remind myself one step at a time, one day at a time, one issue at a time. It was too overwhelming to think of the future. Being able to pause and think about each day and moment as they approached was the only way I survived. And only until recently am I feeling more alive and excited for life.

Natasha Kolombo | Travel Blogger & Snowboarder

A real challenge is your life! Everything else is just a small parts of it. Set your mind right and don’t afraid to make a step forward to face it.

Aleigh Michelle | Loves to cook, take photos, create art and encourage others to live a plant based lifestyle

Just step back for a second and assess the situation. Realize life is always going to throw challenges at us. They will never go away unfortunately so view challenges in a different light. Overcoming them gives us character and important skills to face life head on. Be thankful for these lessons and know you are the only one in charge of your life.. Be excited about what’s to come when you overcome whatever struggle you are encountering. Negativity attracts negativity. So be positive even when it feels impossible. You may be surprised what will come your way when you put more positivity into the world than negativity. You got this:)

Doryn Fine | Photographer & Content Creator

Anytime i’m facing a challenge that seems insurmountable I try to remember the big picture: 1) will this matter to me in 5 years? and 2) I reference the last hardship i overcame and use it as encouragement. At this point, I’ve endured a number of challenges…everything from brain surgery to being kicked out of school for being gay. Overall, I’m grateful for everything life has thrown my way because it’s made me a better and stronger person, and your challenges will do the same.
