Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?
Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.
We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes.

Inch by inch! Sometimes taking challenges full on can seem like a daunting task. Ask yourself “what can I do today?” Dedicate atleast an hour everyday towards your goal and if that seems overwhelming start with 15 minutes a day but what ever you do stay committed to going after that challenge in your life! It will get easier over time!

If you’re facing a challenge you feel is insurmountable breath and meditate. The first thing we do whenever we face difficulties is to hold our breath. When we are able to regulate our breath we have the ability to come from a space that’s none reactive and even change our mood. When we meditate we are able to clear our mind of unnecessary garbage and are able to make clear decisions, problems suddenly seem smaller. The wonderful thing about meditation is that is can be done anywhere. Simply take a few moments to sit in a quiet place, closing your eyes and begin to focus on your breath. Slowly inhaling, drawing the breath from the navel, all the way up to your diaphragm, then out the nose. Now begin slowly exhaling through your nose, repeating this until you feel calmer. Breathing through any thoughts that may come. I’ve solved a lot of life’s problems while meditating. In the stillness, the answers will come. Lastly, know that challenges won’t last forever, you are strong and resilient.

I recommend breaking the challenge down into a step by step process and then just take one step at a time. If something is unsurmountable most often we look at the bigger picture, which often overwhelms us. That’s why it’s best to just look at the next step. And go from there.

Always look ahead and try to see the bright side of things! Try to think of what you’ve accomplished so far and not obsess over the obstacle you are facing. Never ever compare yourself to others, it will just bring you down! Try to clear your mind, take a break, do something you enjoy and recharge to find the solution to your obstacle. Always stay positive!

Whether I’m facing a challenge in motherhood or in business, certain things undoubtedly seem impossible until they’re done. Very rarely is it the easy task that helps us grow, proves our strength, or allows us to realize our abilities. Embrace the hard and it’ll make your success that much sweeter. And if all else fails, make yourself a stiff drink and remember there’s always tomorrow.
Amy Kenyon | Realtor, Actress, mom
When facing a challenge that feels insurmountable, I’ve always made a choice to take a risk.. a risk that usually was extremely scary and required me to follow a path that was foreign to everything I knew. By challenging myself in my darkest moments, I was able to accomplish educational goals, career goals, family goals and even travel goals. Taking a risk isn’t taking the easy way out, it requires our strength, energy and determination, but the rewards are ultimately so sweet in the end.
Lisa Gomez | Certified Fitness Trainer & Group Fitness Instructor

Don’t let your mind take over. Acknowledge the things you are grateful for, do at least one thing a day that brings you joy, love yourself, be proud of yourself and remember that you are a complete badass who is strong enough and capable enough to overcome anything.

Nothing is impossible! There will be days that seem like any problem is too intense to overcome, but keep your head up. Get creative, maybe there is a solution that you haven’t discovered yet. Everything takes time, you will be able to conquer the challenge, believe in yourself, and stay positive.

My advice would be to trust God. He has a plan for your life and with Him, nothing is impossible. One of my favorite quotes that I always try to think about when I’m struggling is this one, written by Bob Goff: ‘Embrace uncertainty. Some of the most beautiful chapters in our lives won’t have a title until much later.
Stephanie Esparza | Health and Wellness Influencer and Content Creator Sharing her Personal Heath Journey
A challenge is temporary. A challenge does not equal the end. A challenge is not where you throw in the towel and say “I didn’t make it.” In fact, you do not have to reach a certain point in your life to say “I made it.” You are making it every single day. You are growing every single day. Give yourself the credit you deserve and know that you are capable of overcoming anything you are faced with. “Never let a stumble in the road be the end of the journey”. – Unknown

When faced with a challenge, the fastest way to overcome it is to find someone who has faced those same challenges and conquered it, then apply that to your situation. If you think the obstacle is to big, you have to know that there was at least one person that has gone through the same challenge.
Bibi Fuentes | Lifestyle blogger, volleyball coach & lash artist
When I’m faced with a challenge I don’t like to face them alone, instead I find a loved one who is willing to listen and hear me out. Reaching out to someone for advice, to bounce off ideas, and get support is my best advice!
