Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.
We had the honor of connecting with some of the city’s brightest female leaders and role models and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
Below, you’ll find their advice and links and other info so you can learn more about them, their work and how to connect with them. We’ll be interviewing many of these amazing women in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

Story of my life! In those cases (and there are many), I always tell myself that I’m being faced with that challenge for a reason I might not see at the time — to learn, to grow, to gain perspective, to work harder, and to come out on the other side a little wiser or more accomplished. Flip your perspective and view adversity as an exciting opportunity to persevere and be a badass. In hindsight, all of my greatest challenges were the ones that defined my career and life the most.

Stop. Breathe. break it down into attainable steps. You got this!
Shima Katouzian | Model and Entrepreneur
To me, nothing is insurmountable. I started from absolute ZERO. Handling 3 different businesses and struggling with time management difficulties. Once you enjoy what you are doing even the difficulties seem like interesting challenges. We have to be open to challenges because that is the only way to new opportunities and new challenges don’t just come up if we stick to out comfort zone. Look at every difficulty as a new opportunity and enjoy the hardship!
Katherine Emrick | Creative
Persist. The only thing stopping you from overcoming any challenge is your mind. Pay close attention to how you view yourself and shift your thinking when negativity starts to roll in. Only you can control how you react to any given situation – and if that’s the case, only you determine how hard you push yourself when things get difficult. It’s worth it when you begin to see just how far you can go with determination and discipline.
Kalina | Business Coach & Wedding Photographer
We all get overwhelmed by the many challenges of life. The best advice I have would be to only focus on the next thing you must do. Take things day by day. Minute by minute. But whatever you do, just don’t give up.
Ramsey Wild | Dress up enthusiast + beauty lover
When you’re facing a huge challenge, it’s so easy to get bogged down by the issue. I always like to think of times where I was in similar tough spots and how I overcame them. By changing your mind set from “How am I going to do this?” to “Look what I am capable of!” You are able to think more clearly and be more creative with your resolution.

If you feel like there is no hope in life , why am I here, why am I doing this – the answer won’t just come. When mental over-floats your mind, switch to physical. I mean the best cure is “Starve and Exercise”. In other words. 1. Change your diet to salads, juices and water. 2. Go to Gym (or exercise) Every Day. 3. When you wake up and before going to bed write down 7 point what you are grateful today (for health, for breathing, for food in a fridge, for car and house, for friends and smiles). Do that and in less than a month you’ll realize what you like about this life and how you like to live it and of course what to do with your situations. And this is what you’re here for.

First, breathe. Second, trust yourself. Then, focus on small things that you CAN do Things happen. Don’t worry. Everything is going to be just fine. If you feel like your challenge is insurmountable, just focus on what you CAN do right now. Small things first, but it will start to make changes that will eventually get you into the right direction. I personally faced multiple challenges in my career, financial difficulty and emotional turmoil. I lost a career of 4 years I worked really hard on, my family lost a home overnight, and I fought for my own depression and health issues. As seen in my Instagram, I was devastated to lose weight and save myself from depression that I was suffering. See my post/picture here. Also, here is my other picture struggling as a doctor AND entrepreneur. See my post/picture here. Each time I faced the challenge, I realized that all you have is you at the end of the day.Whatever the challenge you face, it will not go away, if all you do is to worry about it. So stop worrying and start loving. Love yourself. Love the trouble. Cherish each moment of yourself going through at facing this challenge.Trust that you will be fine, because you WILL be. Give yourself a chance to start somewhere, something that you can do. Find the next thing that you can then do.Take small steps. Before you know it, you will be somewhere that you never imagined. You will look back and be amazed at how much you learned and whom you became.

I feel like there are endless cliches that answer this question. ‘Never give up’, ‘be persistent’, ‘remember why you started’, blah blah blah. But none of those inspo quotes help me when I need concrete advice. When I face something that feels truly insurmountable, I think what helps me the most is talking. Finding other people who are either going through something similar or who have gone through it, and hearing their perspective, their journey, their solutions. What worked for them might not work for you, but it always helps me to know I’m not alone in my feelings, I’m not the first person in the world to encounter something crazy/awesome, and I’m not the only person ever who has been afraid. Talking is therapeutic. That’s why therapists make so much haha.

To plan. Write out a plan to conquer whatever you’re going through . When things are written out , you are more likely to do them . Also , have faith and visualize you actually getting through the challenge, because once you believe in yourself and believing you can get through it , the universe will align and assist you too.
Paget Kagy | Writer/Actress/Producer
Take everything you do one step at a time, and remember to breathe through the process. Know that it will always be extremely hard. That’s not an exception, it’s a rule. If you can take those things to heart and apply them, there shouldn’t be any goal that you can’t achieve.
Mila Maximova | actress and a model
There are no insurmountable challenges in this life. Everyone is going through something. Literally everyone. But no matter what it is if you want to change the situation, you can. Until you’re alive and able to think and breathe you should fight for what is important for you. Find a way. Find the right mindsets that will keep you going. Just never give up. Easier said than done, but that’s the beauty of life, we are not full without those challenges, we need them to be able to enjoy the relief, the reward that comes when we finally overcome them. That time we know we won.
Jaclyn Romo | Professional Makeup Artist from Los Angeles
What I have recently learned in life is that it is okay to take a step back sometimes and even take a break from work, social activities, friends, and even family. Remember that whatever challenge you are facing is not bigger than you. Last month, I was faced with substantial challenges that I thought I would never overcome or get through. I learned to really listen to my body and what it was telling me to do and that was to take a break- so I did. I felt as if it was one thing after the other and I couldn’t escape it. During my break, I cleared my head and a month later I came back to work with a completely different approach and a more positive attitude. A positive attitude can take you very, very far. There is always a solution to a problem, but it is up to you to go out and find it.

“Know your resources. It’s OK to not always be able to conquer everything on your own. To have the ability to recognize that and ask for the support you need is incredibly important and does not mean you are incapable. Lean on the people around you, expand your knowledge, and look at every challenge as an opportunity to grow.”
Daisy K | Model/ Fashion Influencer
My best advice for someone who is facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable is that if it’s scares and challenges you is a sign for you to take action and do it! Take that risk and face it!. If it doesn’t scare you then you’re getting too comfortable in your comfort zone and life style. You need to push yourself to do more and realized that you’re capable of doing more in life, you control it. Don’t let fear stop you from Growing, evolving, and finding yourself, don’t let it control you, because you will never know what amazing opportunities are out there for you. Fight all your demons inside your head. Always follow your heart and do what you’re passionate about your happiness is what matters the most and is okay to be selfish sometimes with yourself. I’ve have come a long way to learn and realized that. There’s always going to be darkness, Fear surrounding your life but you got to remind yourself you’re strong enough to fight any obstacle that comes your way. “Todo tiene una solución menos la muerte.” Meaning everything has a solution except death.

The challenge is a must. You have to face this giant in your life to built character. In the process just be still and learn who you are and who you want to be. If it’s out of your control then just simply let go. No need to stress or have anxiety. Just do your part and trust that everything will fall into place.
Cecilia Foss | Actress & Fashion Model
I always try to stay positive no matter how difficult or impossible a situation might seem, because I think it’s very important not to lose hope. There’s almost always a way to fix things. Take a step back and really asses the problem. Talk to family and friends; don’t be afraid to ask for help and/or advice. Sometimes it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but I think it’s extremely important to look at problems from different angles so don’t be scared to reach out. . Someone might have a solution you didn’t think about and it’s always easier to get through something when you have support.
